Maple Story is a very famous Korean massive multiplayer online role playing game. Yes, I hear everyones prayers "not another Korean MMO!" but lets put down our torchs and pitchfork because Maple is not the witch here.
Set in an unknown land, you set out to battle ferocious and yet sometimes cute monsters while trying to survive in the process. The game lets you chose to be one of the three professions that define you way of life. The classes includes: Warrior, Thief, Magician and Bowman. These classes will also branch into different professions in later levels that obviously have their own special ability.
While bashing monsters skulls for your own greedy need, you will have to do it in a 2-D environment. Yes, go ahead. Read it again. Its in 2-D. But whoever said 2-D graphics was dead? Fortunately, Maple provides beutiful, detailed 2-D graphic that has a sinch of anime to it.
Which is good because this game's uniqeness comes from its humour. Just to get you in the same page, imagine this: you're standing with a (^_^) face on your character, wearing a long rain coat with one bruised "happy" eye, holding a fork tied to a stick as a spear and having a cookie shield in your inventory. You can choose to look like this if you want. Theyres even a grim reaper costume you can buy. All in all, its very original and more are being created by the week.
The battle part of the game is rather exciting at some points and rather dull in others. While the battles are action packed as its the one click attack type of fighting style. It does get boring at some point when you're camping the same monster just for the sake of leveling. Its also a major drag that you level up slowly.
One of the best features of this game is the variety of things there are in this game. Theres many thing you can collect or buy or build yourself! You can take your time of training and play a Maple card game or Omok game. You can also start a guild or go for a party quest. Theres also up to 4 job advancement and a large map for you to explore in. Which means you're gonna be busy. One of my personal favorite is the ability to customize every controls that you posses. That alone should give Maple two stars.
Unfortunately, Maple isn't that perfect game we are all praying for. The audio is an off and on situation. Some places its good. Other places, it gets repetitive and at some places, theres no sound at all. Just the sound of your sword screwing itself in the bodies of your enemies. Another bad (and strange) thing about this game is that even though its called Maple Story, theres absolutely no "story" in it! Sure, theres the usual quest for you to run around like an idiot collecting the drops of the monsters but thats as far as it goes. The anime style graphic, gameplay and the 2-D environment might make those overly mature players to not find this game their fav choice.
Despite all its bad, Ill rate this game an 8/10
